Arol died on June 6th, 2012. She was 73.

May her soul rest in peace. May her complicated legacy turn to renewing humus, as it composts.

Wow, I just spent over an hour reading here. I spent just less than 2 years at Zendik Farm, in California and Bastrop. How can 2 short years of my life haunt me for so long? The time there was mostly good. I learned so much about health, gardening, to not be so caught up in myself, and was set free from some burdens. At the end though the burdens came back.. in the form of Arol and Kare. The philosophy also started to not ring true. The straw that broke it was a day when I made sure all the random small kids were out of the way of the truck I was driving, even getting the loose roaming toddlers into the cab, and then I backed over a dog. It was not hurt badly, but I was treated as an evil person for doing it, never mind I made sure the HUMANS were safe.. the putting forward of animals before people was enough for me. I had other things convincing me also, on the spiritual side, but that is another story. Now 21 years later, I read that Arol is gone. You peg her perfectly in you FAQ's. I still feel a small sense of loss though. I cannot even imagine how this place still haunts you, who were there for so much longer and invested so much more of yourself. I have not had anyone to talk to about this for all these years, glad to find you. The book will be about your time there? there are people that were there that I sure wish I knew where they were or how they were doing. Shey? Ix?
thank you-Kari

Hi Kari. Thanks for writing. Yes, the book is about my time at Zendik. Feel free to email me (madgelma[at]hotmail.com) for info about, or help getting in touch with, particular people from the Farm.

Not much about her passing in the news. I guess Zendik's are running around not knowing what to do anymore (Like the chicken that lost its head).

I don't really think she was a bad person, she just had ideals that were not shared by most of the people.

Misguided ? Maybe.

Remembered for contributions to the world ? Probably not.

15 Minutes of fame ? Over, who were we talking about again ?

Yes, been there, done that. No nightmares just some fond memories of some people. Hellion included :)

Arol destroyed people for her own gain.
Good riddance.

Hello Helen,

I know this sounds morbid for me to ask but what did she die of?

I looked over the web and just found a brief announcent for a memorial at the Zendik farm on the 24th, and then some fellow made a tribute video to her as a neighbor but nothing else at all. No mention of her ailing or anything.

In October 2002, Arol found out that she had advanced ovarian cancer. She fought the cancer off through surgery, chemotherapy, and holistic healing techniques. My understanding is that her death was caused by the cancer's return.

It appears they may be moving away from "Zendik" and more towards "Wulfsong Ranch" which is registered as a non-profit Corporation in West Virginia (in November 2011) under the same charter as Zendik Arts. The only person who registered a website, ossabawislandhogs.com , is a fellow named Eric Taylor who gives an e-mail addy of erim@zendik.org. Eric Taylor is also listed as VP of Zendik Arts and Wulfsong Ranch (the same entity technically but with different names)

So it is moving away from arts and towards farm animals.

No matter what the name, the foundation still pays rent to the estate of Arol Wulfing. I am not sure how they handle the improvements made to the property by the foundation for the landlord. Here in NYC many petty politicians get arrested when their pet "non-Profit" is used for the sake of refurbishing their house or paying for their vacation. I would guess that the non-profit wing of the Wulfing empire would have to get paid from the Feudal overlords for labor and materials and at a fair price since the Lord lives among the serfs.

Many places have laws that state that if a tenant improves a property they are legally renting then they can later sue to pay the difference and own that property. But I am not sure of W. VA. law on this matter and most times this has been successful the tenent has to show a request in writing for a needed improvement, then show it was not done, then show they did it at their expense.

It should be interesting to see how this all falls apart.

A number of people have left recently - Vie, Peiro, Talon, Nika. A year or so ago the Zendiks created a new non-profit called Wulfsong Ranch, which I take it is Erim's baby, since it's focused on livestock. Wulfsong Ranch has its own Facebook page. Zendik's FB page still exists, though nothing much has happened on it for a long time. That's about all the info I have now.

They invested so much into ZF I feel bad that it ended but at the same time a lie cannot be sustained. I wonder how they are integrating back into the "death culture"...

As I think I mentioned to you before, I grew up across the street from Eric Taylor (Erim) and my parents and his are still friends (and still live on the same street). His parents are under the impression that the livestock thing is pretty much all they do.

The Zendik site was taken over by spammers because there were many links to "enhancement" medications and all sorts of stuff coming from the pages of their site. Usually this means nothing more sinister than than a vulnerability in the software than ran the site was exploited, then the pages sold to spammers and then the webhost shut it down page by page so the DNS could not resolve to the site.

This meant they got lazy or no one had enough energy to maintain the website (it does not take much energy to maintain a website with no updates though).

If I was an ex-zendik or current zendik I would watch the state of the property. If it reverts over to the Lords and Ladies of the manor and the foundations end, then you might be able to recover some wages for the labor spent bettering the properties that they occupied in California, Texas, North Carolina and West Virginia.

The concept was great and still resonates within me to this day. I often wonder what would have happened if everyone that came to ZF had not left, if we were all allowed to pursue our genius potential instead of having to throw our talents and passion for our crafts out the gate? Could you imagine? Look what ZF accomplished without that! All the land, all the money...
They could have done so much good, helped so many people but instead they were only interested in the well being of a limited number of individuals. I remember talking with Chen one day and he said he wasn't interested in changing the world as much as he was interested in living a good life. That was the beginning of my end there. I considered myself a Zendik among Zendiks.

It's been some 16 years since I left ZF but the concept still haunts me.
Since Zendik has been disbanded I've seen that some are actually trying to, well..
" But the good news is a small number of us may be starting up a new collective in the near future! Friend Peiro Mele for more info if u are interested. "

I've been in contact with Peiro. I have a place and people and expressed my interest in, "starting up a new collective".
Peiro should be here next week sometime. He's in San Fran on what he calls the last Zendik road trip selling the mag & stuff, although renamed, "the catalyst".
I have a good group of 12 here, artists, musicians, etc... We are on a little over an acre with a large ranch style house that I can buy if I choose to.

My question, being that I left ZF right before you came, Helen, is how is Peiro? How long was he at ZF and what was his position?
This is what he had to say about the breakup.
"We had too many internal issues that could not be resolved...we couldn't evolve out of a heirarchal system and too many people wanted that to happen, while others couldn't swing with something new.....the good news is those of us who wanted a more cooperative system are currently organizing a new farm and collective! Our experience will not die with the end of zendik!"

I know all to well how people were used for places to stay for selling trips. I know Peiro is with one other person so I'm not looking at 10 people.
If anything my people seeing what can happen is important as trying to explain is a bit difficult.
I have a lot of things in place already all we need is some people that understand how ZF was funded as I plan on using that model.

Any info will be great!
